Founded in 1919 and headquartered in Salzbergen, Germany, the company transitioned its name to H&R GmbH & Co. KGaA in August 2016, having previously operated as H&R Aktiengesellschaft. It functions as a subsidiary of H&R Komplementär GmbH.
